March 2026: Deciding where to go next; Kalady, Kerala; Camping in Taiwan

Bell and I spent March first in Kerala (a state in southwest India), then flew to Taiwan. From Taipei in the northwest, we got started cycling on a counterclockwise circumambulation known as 環島 / Huándǎo ("journey around the island").
A page in a journal barely scratches the surface, especially when you have a tendency like me to fixate on particular details. So in this month’s update you’ll find 3 things I was fixated on in March. The pictures convey a broader sense of this period in our lives.

Deciding where to go next
Visa expiring, we don’t want an extension. Deciding is threading the needle between cost, burning season, LGBTQ safety, vegan friendliness, mobile data coverage, minimizing flights, and monsoon / climate. It’s Thailand, then Indonesia, then briefly Madagascar, then we book tickets to Taiwan, flying out of Kochi, Kerala.
Kalady, Kerala
The thing about Kerala is that a lot of the roads, even the main roads, are narrow windy things hemmed in by plantations or just vegetation. My elephant-bursting-out-from-bush-onto-the-road anxiety compelled us to take a scary and uncomfortable, but also pleasant, and nauseating, jeep ride down from the Western Ghats into a lower town called Neriamangalam. It was a one-day ride from there to Kalady, during which we DID see 2 elephants, but they were in trucks, enslaved for temples :( Kalady is by the airport and our hotel had a scale which was incredible because we needed to weigh our absurd amount of gear.
Camping in Taiwan
Sad I have run out of space. Happy we are camping. Taiwan has the best camping in the world, all-things-considered*. <3
*I just mean, it’s safe, beautiful, comfortable, plentiful.
